Obituary of Matthew Wilson

Matthew William Wilson

In loving memory of Matthew William Wilson, affectionately known as Matt, who departed this world on November 20, 2023, at the age of 57- or as he called it 39+. Matt's life, born on August 26, 1966, was a movie masterpiece filled with a God-centered life, profound love, heart of adventure, trials & triumphs, and unwavering support for his cherished children, Ryan and Rachel.

Matthew also has two wonderful sisters. His older sister Jackie, with husband Harout and children Viken and Christianna, loved her brother very much. He was loved as Uncle Matt to his California-based family and along with cousins, Ryan and Rachel, there were many years of family visits that are enjoyed by all. His younger sister Lisa, loved and looked up to her older brother and also very much loves Ryan and Rachel with her whole heart. Matt was not only a faithful father and brother but also a steadfast son to his mother, Yvonne. Despite life's challenges in his childhood, they shared a special bond and enjoyed memorable moments at Disneyland. His mom and his sisters were pivotal in making him the special person he was.

A very proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Matt carried the values of loyalty, courage, and selflessness from his military service into his work and family life. Daily, He lived by the USMC motto, “Semper Fi”, meaning Always Faithful, Always a Marine. His commitment to give back to his second home Scottsdale Bible Church, local and veteran charities, and running the annual Pat's Run (Since the first one in 2005!), will always be a spotlight of his life. A dedicated team leader at the local airport, he shared his sense of humor and professional diligence, endearing himself to colleagues and passengers alike.

Beyond the workplace, Matt's passion for the “Beautiful Game”,  so was palpable. For over a decade, countless pitches across the U.S, and thousands of games, he graced the field as a revered, nationally certified referee. His fair and firm officiating will leave an enduring impact on the local soccer communities, athletic programs, referee associations, and leagues. His commitment to excellence was not confined to sports but reflected in every facet of his life.

Matt's love for life extended to his leisure time, where he enjoyed immersing himself in the world of movies, 80s & jazz music, all types of sports, and family board games. A true cinephile, he found joy in sharing his favorite films and memorable quotes with those around him. His ability to weave movie quotes into everyday conversations brought laughter and a sense of connection to those who knew him.

Matt's legacy shines through his profound dedication, boundless kindness, and a genuine zest for life. He played an instrumental role in shaping not only the lives of Rachel and Ryan, but also in supporting their education achievements, athletic pursuits, and school programs. A devoted father, Matt not only embraced but celebrated his role as Pop with an unmatched fervor. His faith-based love was a guiding force that paved the way for his children's success, and extended far beyond the walls of our home, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched.

He leaves behind a mosaic of memories cherished by close friends, work colleagues, referee crews, and family, all touched by his infectious laughter and the everlasting impact of his support.

Those closest to Matt knew he believed and trusted in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, thus we trust in the words of the apostle John, who in 1 John 5:13 says “I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” So, even with all of his flaws, Matthew is now with Jesus. You too can have this assurance because your salvation depends not on any work you can do, but simply put it relies on Christ’s finished work on the cross.  God bless you and see all of you believers in eternity.

The family kindly requests donations be made to numerous of his favorite charities; Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots, Tunnel to Towers, Pat Tillman Scholarship Foundation, Wounded Warriors, and St. Jude’s in Matthew Wilson's name. May he Rest in Peace, and may the memory of his giving Heart continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him.
