Obituary of Michael Wayne Smithmier
Michael Wayne Smithmier, age 71 of Brighton, Michigan, went home to be with his Lord and
Savior on Wednesday, February 19, 2020. He was born on June 5, 1948 in Paris, Tennessee, to
Betty (Winters) and Billy Smithmier. Michael grew up in Westland, Michigan with his two
younger siblings. He was an outgoing and humorous kid who made friends with everyone, many
of which he kept in contact with until his death. He graduated from John Glenn High School in
1966, and Washtenaw Community College with an associate"s degree. Michael married Rosalie
Mae (Schmittou) on September 26, 1970 in Westland, Michigan. In 1977 they moved to
Brighton, Michigan and raised two children, Joshua and Amanda. Michael worked as a
millwright for General Motors at the Hydramatics/GM Powertrain transmission plant from 1966 -
2004. Upon retirement, he bought his dream bass boat, and spent lots of time fishing, which
was one of his favorite pastimes. Michael also loved painting, and spent the last few years of his
life painting at least one picture every day. He always said that he wanted to use his talent to
show God"s glory, and to make people feel like they were in a place from their memories.
Michael is survived by his wife Rose, son Joshua, and daughter Amanda Lottes (Michael). Also
by his grandson Wesley Lottes, sister Karen Douglas (Kelly), and step sisters Pat Schuster
(Chris) and Betty Webb (Bob). He is also survived by his beloved dog, Petey, and many nieces
and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father Billy Smithmier, daughter Rebecca, mother Betty
Smithmier Barrells, step father Fred Barrells, brother Gary Smithmier, and grandson Hudson
Lottes.
