Obituary of Robert Harry Long
Robert Harry Long, 91 also known as "Bob" "Papa" "Grandpa" "Dad" or "Bucky" of Mesa,
Arizona (originally Jeanette, Pennsylvania) died in Mesa Monday June 7 2020.
The moniker "Bucky" came from his favorite childhood cowboy matinee idol, Buck Jones.
His family and friends loved him dearly, and he loved them back.
Bob really enjoyed (in no particular order) hiking, swimming, coin collecting, knives, guns, golf,
The Shadow, tennis, bridge, racquetball, telling long stories, telling short stories, burnt food,
camping, casinos, half sticks of gum, not wearing a shirt, complaining about political ineptitude,
complaining about the French, sighing heavily, reading, history, floor wrestling, falling asleep in
front of the television, macaroni and cheese with ketchup, clearing brush, talk radio, watching
antelope, the beauty of the desert, walking dogs, driving, movies, army and fraternity stories (he
was president of Alpha Phi Tau), watching Diamondback games and laughing at bad jokes.
Mostly, he enjoyed occasional doughnuts.
Bob had many careers in Materials Management in Ohio and Indiana until the Midwest"s
infamous "Blizzard of 1978" drove him to relocate in the Arizona"s Desert Southwest. In Arizona
he worked as Director of Materials, owned a liquor store, worked for Arizona Department of
Corrections and drove a school bus.
Bob is survived by his children Mary Beth (Woodland) and her husband Wayne, and Scott
Kenneth and his wife Daylene; his grandchildren Taylor Woodland and his wife Jessica, Laura
Woodland, and Robert Long.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, the love of his life Laura Brown, and his sister Ruth
Flechtner.
Bob was a graduate of Heidelberg University (Tiffin, Ohio), he was a Korean War Veteran (Army
Signal Corps) and member of Church of the Master - Presbyterian in Mesa.
Bob will be missed greatly by his family and friends who are not only left with cherished
memories but also his large collection of leather work gloves, knives, crystal rocks and dusty
photos.
You will always be with us in our daily lives and hearts. Rest easy Bob.
