Obituary for Michael Jay Smith

Michael Jay Smith of Gilbert, Arizona, passed away on October 4, 2018 after battling brain and liver cancer for the past six and a half months.

Michael was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 9, 1951. He was the third child of Roland and Madge Smith. When Michael was only two years old and his sister Kathleen was only seven years old, their birth parents were killed in a small plane accident. Mike and Kathy were then raised by their uncle and aunt, Milan Dale and Jessica Udall Smith. Michael primarily grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, along with Kathy and their eight cousins, now their siblings. He attended Radnor Elementary School, Thomas W. Pyle Junior High School and Harker Preparatory School, graduating from Harker in 1969. After serving a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Michael rejoined his family, then living in London, England.

Michael met his bride to be, Karen Taylor, while they were both students at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. They were married on August 26,1977 in the Salt Lake Temple. Mike graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1978. Two years later, Michael and Karen moved to McLean, Virginia, where Karen worked as a nurse and Mike attended The Georgetown University School of Dentistry in nearby Washington, D.C.

After graduating from dental school in 1984, Michael and Karen moved with their young family to Mesa, Arizona. Michael opened and managed his own family dental practice in Mesa for 32 years. Michael was a true craftsman when it came to dental work, and his practice grew steadily over the years. In 2002 Mike became the owner of the commercial building where his own dental practice was located.

Michael’s patients, staff and family benefitted from his generous spirit and contagious sense of humor. He lived life to the fullest, always placing the love he had for his wife and family above all else. As a humble man, Mike never realized just how many lives he touched and changed for the better just by being himself. Throughout his life, Michael had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and he studied many subjects. He particularly enjoyed studying religion and astronomy. Mike never ceased questioning the status quo. He collected and read hundreds of books. Along with his quest for knowledge, Michael had a great passion for sports cars, cooking, gardening and, of course, his grandchildren.

Michael is survived by his wife, Karen Taylor Smith, daughters, Kari (Justin) Cook, Kristin (Tim) Reed, Kenna Smith, Kelli Smith and son, Matthew Smith along with seven grandchildren, Caleb, Gunner, Bree, and Bode Cook and Corinne, Braedon, and Lincoln Reed. He was preceded in death by his birth parents, Roland and Madge Smith, adoptive parents, Milan and Jessica Smith, brother Ronnie Smith, sister Lisa Ellen Smith and half-brother Roland Blood Smith.
