Life Story for Richard Dunn

Richard Dunn
Richard Joseph Dunn went to be with the Lord on September 6, 2018, surrounded by love at his
home in Gilbert, Arizona. He was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, to J. Robert Dunn and Mary
Goodall Dunn on January 4, 1948. He attended Pennsylvania State University - Shenango
Campus and Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado, obtained both his bachelor’s and
master’s degrees from Arizona State University, and later completed a post-graduate fellowship
at the University of Colorado - Boulder. He proudly served in the Air Force during the Vietnam
War and was stationed in remote Alaska, Colorado, and Arizona.
He was known by many as Coach Rick Dunn, a constant presence in Arizona high school
football since the mid-1970s. He taught thousands of high school students over the last 40
years in Gilbert, both on and off the football field. He truly enjoyed the game of football and the
teams he coached won several high school state championships. He encouraged and believed
in many young people who didn’t know how to believe in themselves.
Rick’s love of the outdoors made him both an avid hunter and fisherman all his life. He travelled
all across the United States and later the world to live out the history he enjoyed reading about
in books. He could draw a map complete with directions on any available scrap of paper at a
moment’s notice. Although he had a quiet but determined demeanor, he was a tremendous
storyteller and an exceptional listener to those lucky enough to know him. He attended Mission
Community Church in Gilbert.
Rick was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of
more than 46 years, Donna Sipka Dunn, son Brian (Kristin) Dunn, daughter Tiffany (Daniel)
Pittman, mother Mary Goodall Dunn, brother Daniel (Kathleen) Dunn, brother Jeffrey Dunn, and
6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father J. Robert (Betty) Dunn and his brother
R. Timothy (Sandy) Dunn.
A memorial service celebrating Rick’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, in
the Gilbert High School Auditorium (1101 E. Elliot Rd., Gilbert, AZ 85234). The service will be
open to any family and friends in the local community who wish to honor him.
